Prenatal Care
Prenatal Care
Prenatal visits are scheduled every 4 weeks from 12 to 30 weeks gestation, every 2 weeks until 36 weeks gestation, and finally, weekly until birth. If pregnancy continues past 41 weeks, visits are scheduled every 2-3 days. Prenatal visits last approximately 30 minutes. Visits include: review of health and family history, physical exam, assessment of maternal blood pressure, pulse, nutrition, urinalysis, well-being and questions, assessment of fetal heart rate, growth, and position. We also discuss routinely offered screening and diagnostics so women can make informed decisions regarding their pregnancy and baby. During prenatal visits we get to know each other. I note your birth preferences. We plan for success by understanding the physiology of labor and birth.
At 36 or 37 weeks I will come to your home for a prenatal visit. The home visit will include a regular appointment and also review birth preferences and practical set-up. Together, we will determine a loose plan for birth and recovery, location of tub if applicable, and take inventory of birth supplies. We will also discuss your support team and provisions for siblings.
BIRTH
BIRTH
It is always the perfect day for a baby! I will arrive at your house during active labor with my many bags and totes. We will have a flexible plan in place for your wishes and desires at birth. I will monitor the well-being of both you and your baby, partnering with you every step of the way to honor your unique birth process. My role involves assessing the parameters of normal physiological birth and offering guidance and support. Once baby has arrived, I will carefully assess the health of mom and baby, staying until both are settled and comfortable. Includes tub use for water birth (if desired). Midwifery care includes Certified Professional Midwife along with attendance of a trained assistant.
Postpartum
Postpartum
The weeks following birth involve a major physical and emotional adjustment. Resting, eating well, successful breastfeeding, and postpartum support help with a smooth transition/transformation. Postpartum care typically includes 3-5 appointments. Visits during the first two weeks are always in-home. I will come back to your house for a postpartum visit between 24-48 hours after birth to support you and baby, assess maternal recovery, facilitate breastfeeding, discuss concerns, perform newborn metabolic screening and critical congenital heart disease screening, weigh and assess baby, and to discuss normal parameters for newborn behavior. Midwifery care includes filing birth certificate and applying for social security number for baby.
Lactation Support
Lactation Support
Breastfeeding is equally rewarding and demanding. It creates a beautiful bond between mother and child, provides optimal nutrition for baby, and allows ideal healing from pregnancy and birth. Planning for success through education during prenatal care is important. Midwifery care includes tangible breastfeeding support through information, assessment of baby growth and output, latch guidance and correction, recommendations for frequency of feeding, jaundice assessment, and good old tips and tricks.
